Skin concern

Serum for dry skin

Dry skin is short on oil. Dehydrated skin is short on water. Most skin that feels tight and looks flaky is a bit of both, and a water-based serum with hyaluronic acid is the most direct way to address the water side before moisturizer seals it in.

Dry or dehydrated

The outer layer of skin holds water with help from its own lipids and natural moisturizing factors. Hot showers, foaming cleansers, indoor heating and dry winter air pull that water out faster than skin can replace it. The signs are familiar: tightness right after washing, rough patches around the nose and cheeks, and fine lines that look deeper by evening. Dehydration can show up on any skin type, oily skin included.

Why hyaluronic acid is the core

Hyaluronic acid is a humectant. It attracts water and holds it at the surface, which is why skin looks plumper and feels softer shortly after you apply it. The Hyaluronic Acid Serum is built around sodium hyaluronate, the salt form of hyaluronic acid, with glycerin as a second humectant and butylene glycol as a lightweight conditioning ingredient. Apply it to slightly damp skin. A humectant needs water nearby to do its work.

A steady daily baseline

Some dry skin also feels easily irritated and does better with a calm, consistent layer every day. That is the job of the Hydration Serum. It contains no hyaluronic acid. Glycerin and an antioxidant-rich Cassia obtusifolia seed extract form a botanical layer that keeps skin comfortable and balanced. Many dry-skin routines use both, for different jobs: Hyaluronic Acid Serum first on damp skin, Hydration Serum on top.

What to expect

Skin usually feels more comfortable from the first application. The look of flaking and dehydration lines softens with steady daily use, not overnight. A serum works alongside moisturizer, not instead of it. Keep cleansing gentle, use lukewarm water, and let moisturizer follow the serum within a minute so the water it draws in stays put.

Questions

Common questions.

What kind of serum helps dry skin?

Look for a water-based serum built around humectants such as hyaluronic acid, which draw water into the surface of the skin. Follow it with a moisturizer to hold that water in. Serums with heavy fragrance or high levels of alcohol can leave dry skin feeling tighter.

Should I put hyaluronic acid on wet or dry skin?

Slightly damp skin. Hyaluronic acid holds onto water that is already there, so applying it after cleansing, before your face is fully dry, gives it something to work with. Apply moisturizer right after so the hydration does not evaporate.

Can a serum replace moisturizer for dry skin?

Not for dry skin. A hydrating serum adds water to the surface, while a moisturizer adds the lipids that keep that water from escaping. Dry skin needs both steps. Oily skin can sometimes get by with a serum and a very light gel moisturizer.
